Building student resilience through failure & setbacks

March 22, 2013 by TrakSearch

Students taking a computerized exam

To the casual reader there seems to be so many articles these days about the lack of resilience in our young people, with much of the blame being placed upon all of us overprotective parents.  The blog by Jessica Lahey refers to a study out of the Queensland University of Technology on the impact on students who are not allowed to experience the pain of setback.

The research by Judith Locke, et. al., is a study by parenting professionals on the concept of ‘overparenting’ and what happens to young people who are not required to face the consequences of their actions. Read Jessica’s article titled ‘Why Parents Need Help to Let Their Children Fail‘ and be amazed by the response of one parent to the teacher’s claim that her child was guilty of plagiarism.
