Career advice has evolved over time. From following in your parents footsteps….. to following the money. And now you are likely to hear “follow your passion” more than ever. In this TED talk, Benjamin Todd, outlines the research that indicates that following your passion may not be the best career advice.
Benjamin shares that the 3 main components of the follow your passion advice generally are:
- Identify your greatest interest
- Find careers that match interests
- Pursue those careers no matter what
The common belief is that following these steps will lead to “success” and a fulfilling career.
Benjamin contends that your present interests are not a solid basis for career decisions. He suggests a more fulfilling career can be attained through doing what’s valuable. This in turn leads people to become passionate about what they do…..resulting in a fulfilling career.
So what are the practical steps Benjamin outlines to find what is valuable?
Watch the full 15 minute TED Talk below and find out.
So what career advice have you provided in the past? Is it more closely aligned to one of those mentioned? Or is it a mix of each? Ultimately it is a matter of perspective and a very subjective topic at that.
