The ‘art of conversation’ – a lost skill to be regained?

The ‘art of conversation’ – a lost skill to be regained?

The art of conversation helps us develop positive, trusting relationships. The conversations we have day-to-day with our peers, managers and team members creates the climate for relationships to grow. This can be the foundation of a rewarding and successful career.

How often have you listened to someone and did so while looking for the chance to speak yourself? Have you ever been frustrated when talking to someone and finding them looking for a chance to escape?

The ‘art of conversation‘ is being lost in an era of digital communications.

My family was out at dinner recently and a young couple on the next table (seemingly on a date) didn’t speak to each other for the first hour or so. They both were too busy on their smartphones to engage in something as mundane as conversation. They took no interest in each other until after the main course. This was only because they started to play a game on one of their phones!

So how do we connect by conversation?

This 12 minute TEDtalk by Celeste Headlee provides 10 suggestions on how we all can improve on such an important life skill.
