- Explore the rewards of opening a primary school
- St Joseph’s Parish School, Weipa, NTH QLD
- Commence by term 3 2015
Under the leadership of the Bishop of Cairns, James Foley, Catholic Education Services in the Diocese of Cairns comprises nineteen primary schools, one Prep to Year 12 college, and seven secondary colleges.
A new Catholic school, St Joseph’s Parish School, will open in Weipa for the 2016 school year with construction of the first stage – Prep to Year 3 – now underway. The school will eventually be a single stream primary school with around 180 students. Catholic Education anticipates the school will play an active role in the life of the Weipa and Napranum communities and also be a practical measure of Catholic Education’s confidence in Weipa’s future as a dynamic mining and service community on the Cape.
Catholic Education’s moves to establish a school in Weipa follows widespread community consultation that found strong support for a new Catholic school. Weipa is the largest township in the Far North Queensland region not to have a choice of education provider.
